I a оба (1). Both употребляется только в утвердительных и вопросительных предложениях и обозначает двоих (из двух):on both sides of the street — по обе стороны улицы;
on both sides of the paper — на той и другой стороне листа бумаги;
to hold smth in both hands — держать что-либо обеими руками.
В отрицательных предложениях вместо both употребляется neither.Ср. Both statements are true — Справедливы оба утверждения и
Neither statement is true — Неправильны оба утверждения/оба утверждения неправильны/ни то, ни другое утверждение не верно.
Этому же правилу подчиняются и местоимения both и neither:Both of the students came, но Neither of the students came — Оба студента пришли (Оба студента не пришли).
(2). Прилагательное both стоит непосредственно перед указательным или притяжательным местоимением или определенным артиклем, относящимся к существительному:Both my (these, the) cars are out of order — Обе мои (эти) машины не в порядке.
Чаще, однако, в этой позиции употребляется местоимение both с предлогом of:both of my (of these, of the) brothers — оба мои (мои оба) брата.
Этому правилу следуют прилагательное и местоимение all:all his books или all of his books — все его книги.
II prn оба (1). Both, относящееся к личному местоимению, стоит либо после него — they (you, we) both, либо перед ним, но обязательно с предлогом of — both of them (of us):They have both been to London.
В первом случае глагол to be или какой-либо вспомогательный или модальный глагол стоит между местоимениями:They have both been to London.
We were both at home — Мы оба были дома.
